There are many important events in American history. Between the roaring twenties and the Wild West there is so much to choose from. One of the most recent and most tragic events in American history were the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Hundreds of lives were lost, leading to extreme reformation of the United States surveillance and homeland security systems. The 9/11 terrorist attack was an important event in America’s history that has had lasting effects on American society. On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked by 19 Arab Islamist extremists and used as weapons of mass destruction. The first plane was flown into the North Tower at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan at 8:46AM. The people inside the South Tower were told to remain in the building and that they had nothing to worry about, a decision proven to be a bad one when a second plane hit the South Tower at 9:03AM. Both buildings collapsed no more than 90 minutes after the crash with more than 2,600 people dying that day. At 9:37AM, a third plane hit the Pentagon, killing 125 people and at 10:03 the fourth plane crashed into a field in Southern Pennsylvania, killing 256 people. The fourth plane was originally targeting the White House but its course was interrupted by brave passengers who fought against the hijackers to the best of their abilities.
